Geargia and their Boss
In anticipation of the new set, Return of the Duelist, I went threw the cards and was drawn quickly to an new archtype involving the same old lovely level 4/EARTH/Machine-type monsters. Though there are completely different from Machinas and Gadgets, they can work just as well with both archtypes.
Geargia are monsters that focus on searching other Geargias and overlaying to summon
Gear Gigant X. One would think that at this point, the xyz monster could only be used to search out other Geargia monsters and repeat the same thing, but this card comes with an interesting effect:
"Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; add 1 Level 4 or lower Machine-Type monster from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand. When this card leaves the field: You can target 1 Level 3 or lower "Geargia" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target." Because the machine that can be searched isn't "name specific" you can search out anything that falls under the category of "Level 4 or lower Machine-type monster". As if that isn't enough, you get to add it to your hand from your Deck or Graveyard which can allow you to recycle any monster you want. The 2nd effect is nice ofc but not that important seeing as there are only 2 level 3 or lower Geargia atm, both of which aren't that good with their effects. Now you may be asking yourself, "This card is nice and all, but how can I get it out without losing advantage or risking anything?", well there is a way.
There are, in fact, a lot of ways to summon this monster but some of those may require a certain combination of cards which may not always be available, so I will explain a nearly 100% consistent way to get this monster out, and it involves up to 3 cards, but can start from 1.
Geargiarmor, Geargiaccelerator, & Geargiarsenal
Geargiarmor:Once per turn: You can change this card to face-down Defense Position. When this card is flipped face-up: You can add 1 "Geargia" monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Geargiarmor".
Geargiaccelerator:If you control a "Geargia" monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand) in face-up Defense Position. When this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard: You can add 1 "Geargia" monster from your Graveyard to your hand, except "Geargiaccelerator".
Geargiarsenal:This card gains 200 ATK for each face-up "Geargia" monster you control. You can Tribute this card; Special Summon 1 "Geargia" monster from your Deck in face-up Defense Position, except "Geargiarsenal".
The combo that is commonly used is simple, yet devastating. Basically, you can start it just by setting Geargiarmor(it's hard to get over with 1900DEF and it's effect goes off whenever it's flipped face-up). When it's effect goes of, the card to search is Geargiaccelerator, which I'll get to next. The best way to get it's effect is to let your opponent attack this card while it's face-down, that way if it doesn't survive the opponent won't be able to stop you from searching in most cases, and if it does survive, next turn you can flip it face-down with it's effect, then change it's battle position to search for another Geargia.
Next is Geargiaccelerator. Once you have another Geargia on the field, this card is a path to an instant xyz. While you control another face-up Geargia, you can special summon this card in face-up defense position, which in most scenarios will give you 2 face-up level 4 monsters. If you managed to use Geargiarmor's effect in your turn after your opponent attacked it during their turn, you would have 3 level 4 monsters allowing you to overlay and summon the more difficult rank 4 monsters. Needless to say this is a very fast way to get out Gear Gigant X. Another reason why this card is so good though is because of it's stats and destruction effect. It's 1400ATK means that it gets under Bottomless Trap Hole and once you have Geargiarmor and Geargiaccelerator on the field, your opponent will most likely use Torrential Tribute if he/she has it to stop you from overlaying them, thus giving you a chance to use Geargiaccelerator's effect to add Geargiarmor or any other Geargia from your graveyard to your hand. With that you can constantly recycle them and have at least 1 piece of the combo with you always.
Lastly is Geargiarsenal. Though it isn't a necessary part of the combo, it does help you in those moments when you need to get access to Geargiarmor from the deck. You can tribute this to summon any Geargia from you deck, but since the monster will be in defense position, the monster usually summoned is Geargiarmor (Geargiaccelerator can also be summoned assuming you want it's destruction effect).
That's about it for this combo for the archtype, though this is only a small part of a bigger picture. Geargiarmor and Geargiaccelerator can be used to perform massive combos involving synchros and other xyz monsters. Thnx for reading as always, hope you enjoyed it.
